Why is there a plus sign (+) following the SPF number on Eclipse SPF50+?

The “SPF50+” on the label of Eclipse SPF50+ indicates that the measured SPF protection was in excess of 50. In the United States, the FDA regulatory agency no longer permits for sunscreens to be labeled with an SPF higher than 50, as the agency considers any number above 50 to be meaningless and unable to convey any higher protection to the skin from sun damage.
