Eclipse SPF50+ incorporates zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as sunscreen actives, providing an SPF greater than 50. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the US government regulatory body for sunscreens, no longer permits SPFs over 50 to be reported, saying that SPF numbers greater than 50 have no practical meaning for the user or in terms of sun protection provided by the product. Both sunscreen actives are micro-encapsulated but not nano-encapsulated, i.e. their size is small enough to be considered “micro” but not small enough to be “nano” particles. Eclipse SPF50+ lessens risks of skin cancer development and photoaging as a purely physical sunscreen since both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical sunscreen actives (not chemical actives) by mechanism. Eclipse SPF50+ is a broad-spectrum sunscreen, meaning that it provides protection against both UVA and UVB solar rays.
