What is keratolytic versus non-keratolytic retinol?

Keratolytic retinol aids in the breakdown of excess and damaged skin cells, leading to skin shedding, which can occur either visibly or non-visibly. Non-keratolytic retinol helps maintain a balance between cell renewal and turnover, supporting the skin’s natural process of forming new keratinocyte cells and shedding them at the end of their cycle. However, non-keratolytic retinol does not induce accelerated shedding.
